The Cradle ofCivilization

Southern Iraq is where civilization began. The Mesopotamian Marshes, the legendary Garden of Eden, stretch across the horizon, a labyrinth of reed islands and shimmering waterways.

Beyond the marshes lie the ancient cities of Ur, birthplace of Abraham, and Babylon, where Nebuchadnezzar's Ishtar Gate once blazed with lapis lazuli and gold.

Stairway toHeaven

Five thousand years ago, the city of Ur rose beside the Euphrates - and with it the great ziggurat of Etemennigur, the temple of Nanna, moon god of the Sumerians. King Ur-Nammu raised its seven stacked terraces around 2100 BCE, carrying the shrine of the god ever closer to the sky.

The Sumerians believed the gods descended to earth upon such stairways. Here, at the foot of this mountain of brick, writing was born, the wheel first turned, and law was recorded for the first time - the dawn of everything we call civilization, and the birthplace of Abraham.

Baghdad & theSilk Road

In the 8th century, Baghdad was the center of the world. The House of Wisdom drew scholars from across Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Today, the spiraling Malwiya Minaret still rises above Samarra, a monument to the Abbasid Caliphate. The Mustansiriya Madrasa stands as one of the oldest universities on earth.

The WingedGuardian

The Lamassu, a winged bull with the head of a king, stood guard at the gates of Assyrian palaces and temples. Carved from a single block of stone, these colossal figures were both architectural marvels and spiritual protectors of the realm.

At Nineveh and Nimrud, the Lamassu watched over the greatest empire the world had yet seen. Their remnants still stand where they fell, an empire that carved its pride into stone.

The SacredDate Palm

For over 5,000 years, the date palm has been the lifeblood of Mesopotamia. Ancient Sumerians called it the “Tree of Life”, its fruit sustained empires, its wood built temples, and its shade created paradise in the desert.

Today, Iraq is home to over 20 million date palms, with some of the finest varieties in the world. To walk through a palm grove along the Shatt al-Arab is to step into a landscape that has nourished civilization since the dawn of history. As the saying goes, the date palm is Mesopotamia's gift to the world, a tree that gives food, shelter, and shade in equal measure.

The GoddessShahiro

Shahiro, the Lady of the First Light - the radiant dawn that breaks over the northern plains. In the old temples of the desert she was honoured as the goddess of the morning, the gentle radiance that wakes the world and guides the traveler home.

Her image, painted in gold and lapis, kept watch over the thresholds of the ancient cities - from the shrines of Hatra to the sanctuaries of the steppe. A reminder that even in the desert, the light always returns.
